About Festival 2018

Preamble

The fifth edition of the SND European Theatre Festival Eurokontext.sk opens in June 2018 to bring outstanding productions in musical drama and dance theatre, hence the best and the latest in opera and ballet.

Within the operatic chapter of the Festival, we shall be hosting The Opera of the State Theatre Košice with Wagner’s The Fairies that opened in Slovakia last year. It is also a year since The National Moravian–Silesian Theatre in Ostrava visited Bratislava. Coming back again, the ensemble is bringing the opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Dmitry Shostakovich, one of the foremost composers of the 20th century. For the first time ever, we shall be hosting on stage the SND the Krakow Opera which is not missing the opportunity to treat us with such gem, as Szymanovski’s modernistic oeuvre King Roger of 1924. Eurokontext.sk is also bringing you the Opera of the National Theatre in Prague with their production of Werther by Europe’s distinguished operatic director Willy Decker. The Prague ensemble is presenting the oeuvre with Oper Frankfurt. The production will only be premièred a few days before it ventures out to Bratislava. SND Opera will contribute to the Festival its latest productions: Puccini’s iconic Tosca directed by Martin Bendik,; the fairy tale opera Sadko by the Russian Romanticist Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; Puccini’s three single-act operas that make up Il Trittico directed by the outstanding drama director Roman Polák; the most popular oeuvre by Oskar Nedbal – the operetta The Polish Blood; and the single-act musical comedy The Spanish Hour that will be presented within a joint opera and ballet night.

Guest performances within the ballet chapter of the Festival include the contemporary dance project The Anne Frank Diary by the Ballet of the State Theatre in Košice and three unique dance compositions by Béla Bartók, entitled Bartók’s Dance Tryptich to be brought by the Hungarian National Ballet. The Festival shall culminate with the performance of the celebrated St Petersburg company, the Eifman Ballet with their ballet epic Tchaikovsky. PRO et CONTRA. SND Ballet will bring its latest piece, Esmeralda; a production of Daphnis and Chloe by member of the youngest generation of choreographers and psychological ballet; and Beyond Sin / The Brothers Karamazov, the dance equivalent to Dostoyevsky’s masterpiece.
