The fairies

Opera of the State Theatre Košice

About performance

Wagner’s oeuvre The Fairies is staged by the Košice opera in Slovak première. The first completed opera that was yet composed in the style of German Romanticism and strongly influenced by Carl Maria von Weber and Heinrich Marschner, was first staged in Munich in June 1888, five years after Wagner’s passing. Curiously, music was then directed by the young Richard Strauss with the première performance conducted by Franz Fischer. Even though the opera was received to high acclaim, in time it virtually fell into abyss and is still only rarely staged. The romantic story of the King Arindal’s longing for love and ideal world, set in Bavarian context of the late 19th century is brought by the Košice opera with an outstanding production team and guest performers.
