About performance
Following the success of Prokofiev’s opera The Love for Three Oranges (2014) sa Michał Znaniecki makes a comeback on stage in Krakow to stage King Roger. Szymanowski’s modernist oeuvre (1924) is recently drawing growing attention and is often staged worldwide. Some of the popular productions of the music drama include those by the stage director Krzystof Warlikowski (Opéra Bastille, Paris, 2009; Teatro Real, Madrid, 2011), Michał Znaniecki (Bilbao, 2012) or by Kasper Holten (Royal Opera House, London, 2015). Znaniecki’s Krakow staging accentuates human dimension of the oeuvre: the king explores his own individuality in its essential facets – a man, leader, head of family, father, husband. He undergoes emotional and mental transformation to raise the fundamental questions about the meaning of being.
