About performance
The peculiar musical language of the Impressionists is no commonplace presence on operatic stage, as the operatic opus of the time contains only a handful of pieces. That also why the SND Opera and Ballet had decided to hold a joint opera and ballet night to present the works by the eminent French composer Maurice Ravel: the one-act musical comedy The Spanish Hour and the ballet Daphnis and Chloé based on a legend from the Ancient Greek mythology. The fusion of two performing genres is also a sequel within the dramaturgical line of the Slovak National Theatre that dates back to the successful Bartók night with the acclaimed ballet and opera synthesis of The Wooden Prince and the Bluebeard’s Castle. To presents the classic comedy plot of hiding a lover in a wardrobe, Ravel places it on a charming and colourful canvass with new imitative sound shades, sympathetically and accurately responding to humorous and grotesque situations. He offers us an opportunity to both have fun and enjoy the unusual beauty of his fine musical aesthetics.
